Victor Terán

Agave Festival is excited to present Victor Teran, the preeminent living poet of the Isthmus Zapotec language, for an event at Crowley Theater on Sunday, June 9th. A three-time recipient of national fellowships for writers of indigenous languages, Teran is the author of several books, including Ca Guichi Xti Guendaranaxhii (The Spines Of Love) and Sica ti Gubidxa Cubi (Like a New Sun) the latter of which provides the title for a selection of New Indigenous Writing from Mexico that appeared in 2018 to great acclaim.

Teran will join us to read from his work and to share the stage with fellow poet, David Shook, who will also serve as his translator. Together, Teran and Shook edited the aforementioned selection, Like a New Sun, which was published by Shook’s press @phoneme_media which is based in Los Angeles.

Teran was born in Juchitan de Zaragoza in southeastern Oaxaca where he has worked as a secondary school teacher in media education.

Additional works by Teran can be found in the books, “Reversible Monuments” published by @copper_canyon_pressand “Words of the True People’s” published by University of Texas Press.
