Film: Agave is Life
Agave is Life is an exploration of the history of the agave plant in the cultures of Mexico and the American Southwest. Starting thousands of years ago when hunter-gatherers viewed the hardy desert succulent with its myriad uses as a gift from the gods, agave's story is told through the lens of archaeological, ethnographic and modern day vignettes, closing with concerns about threats to the plant's future.
A Q & A with the filmmakers will follow the screening, which is sponsored by GEM&BOLT Mezcal.

His talk for Agave Fest will address the 500 generations of American Indians who have lived in the Chihuahuan Desert area of the Rio Grande and the eight millennia of plant baking practices that sustained them.

Judd Foundation: Block Tour and Talk by Johnny Sufficool
On Saturday, June 3 from 10:00am to 12:00pm Judd Foundation will host Open Hours of La Mansana de Chinati/The Block, Donald Judd’s residence and studio spaces in downtown Marfa. Visits are self-guided and free to the public. At 11:30am, Big Bend resident and local legend, Johnny Sufficool will share his intimate knowledge of the regional uses of the agave as learned from the Tarahumara Indians of Northern Chihuahua. Suffico0l is a long time producer of sotol and other agave-based spirits.

Dr. Carolyn Boyd will speak about the findings of her recent book, "The White Shaman Mural," in which she builds a case that the mural, located in the lower Pecos Canyon-lands, tells the story of the birth of the sun and the beginning of time - which would make it one of the oldest pictorial creation narratives in North America.
