In June 2018, after 16 years of partial use, the adobe building set aside to house the Regional Museum of Ojinaga will open its six galleries. A participatory planning process to identify the Museum’s principle themes got its start in 2014 and the finished proposal was accepted at a presentation before the Governmental Council, who set aside funds for the project, in 2016.  At the end of the following year, nine specialists in archaeology, history and anthropology identified the information and objects that would be shared with the museum’s directorship in order to determine the different histories that would be told in each of the Museum’s galleries. The renovation of the building, selection and installation of furnishing, hiring of staff, and the hanging of five permanent and four temporary exhibition gallerires began in March of this year.

The Regional Museum of Ojinaga promises to become the central cultural space for the Chihuahuan Desert region and a means of increasing tourism and cultural exchange along the Chihuahua / Texas border. Additionaly, it’s opening will support the educational development of children and young people, and provide a strong sense of identity for themselves and their families.

Anthropologist Jorge Carrera Robles was born in La Mesa del Huracán, Chihuahua in 1961. He has authored or co-authored more than twenty books and scholarly essays. He is the director of INAH, the National Institute of Anthropology and History for the state of Chihuahua; President and Founder of Umbral AC, a cultural agency dedicated to building community; and Ex-director of the Chihuahuan Institute of Culture (1995, 1996, 2004-2010).

Luego de 16 años de permanecer con uso parcial, el edificio de adobe destinado a albergar el Museo Regional de Ojinaga (MRO) abrirá sus seis salas de exhibición durante el mes de junio de 2018. Fue a mediados de 2014 que se llevó a cabo un ejercicio de planeación participativa para definir los contenidos museográficos temáticos.  La propuesta se integró en un expediente técnico que se presentó ante la Cámara de Diputados quien la aprobó etiquetando recursos para su realización en 2016. A finales del siguiente año nueve especialistas en arqueología, historia y antropología proporcionaron información científica utilizada por el museólogo encargado de contar las diferentes “historias” de cada una de las salas. En marzo de 2018 dio inicio el acondicionamiento del edificio, el diseño y elaboración del mobiliario, instalación de equipos, y el montaje museográfico de las cinco salas permanentes y la de exposiciones temporales.

EL MRO seguramente se convertirá en el espacio cultural más importante de la región del desierto chihuahuense y una alternativa para fomentar el turismo cultural en el intercambio fronterizo Chihuahua/Texas. Sin duda, su apertura ayudará a la formación educativa de los niños y jóvenes, fortaleciendo su identidad y la de sus familias.

Originario de la Mesa del Huracán, Chihuahua (1961). Antropólogo social, maestro en Derecho Social y doctor en Investigación. Autor y coautor de más de 20 libros y materiales educativos. Actualmente es el Delegado en Chihuahua del Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, Presidente Fundador de Umbral AC. Ex director del Instituto Chihuahuense de la Cultura (1995-96 y 2004-2010).
