Tony Berlant

Please join Judd Foundation and Agave Festival Marfa for a discussion with Judd Foundation Visiting Scholar Tony Berlant. Berlant will discuss, “Decoding Mimbres,” an exhibition of Mimbres ceramics that he organized at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2018. The talk will explore the possible botanical basis, mostly relating to the datura plant, for the otherwise abstract design work in this extraordinary ceramic tradition of the Mogollon Culture. Berlant, who is an artist himself, is also the co-author, along with Mary Kahlenberg, of “Walk in Beauty: the Navajo and Their Blankets”, one of the primary books on the subject of Navajo textiles. He also helped the artist Donald Judd assemble his collection of Navajo blankets and Mimbres pottery, now on permanent view at his primary residence in Marfa, known as La Mansana de Chinati/The Block. Free.
